MWTC Capstone
The capstone portfolio is the culmination of your program of study in the MWTC Program. The capstone portfolio serves two purposes:
- By creating a capstone portfolio, you bring together your work in a way that allows you to integrate work done for distinct classes and to demonstrate how you have applied concepts.
- Your portfolio is an important assessment tool. Your portfolio will be evaluated by a faculty committee with two goals in mind:
- to provide you with an overall evaluation of your work throughout the program
- to determine how well we, as a Program, are doing
The Capstone course will assist you with the process of composing and presenting your portfolio. As you are taking courses, you may want to keep a "working portfolio" of your assignments and other course materials. Keeping a working portfolio will help with organizing your work so that you can more easily and quickly make selections when it comes time to decide on the content of your capstone portfolio. You may also want to keep notes or a journal about individual courses. Notes or a journal can help serve as memory prompts or reminders about the work you did and what you learned in individual courses that will help as you write your persuasive statement for the capstone portfolio.
The capstone portfolio will be evaluated using Program Outcomes as criteria. The Outcomes represent what we, as faculty, believe you should know and be able to do by the time you graduate. Your coursework in the Program should help you to achieve these outcomes. The sooner you become familiar with them, the more prepared you will be to construct a persuasive statement and select evidence which demonstrates them.
General Requirements
- You must register for the Capstone course (TWC490) in the semester you will graduate. The Capstone course cannot be taken early.
- You must pass the Capstone course with a grade of C or better. Your portfolio will not be accepted if you have not earned the minimum grade of C and you will be required to retake the Capstone course.
- Your portfolio must be turned in by the submission deadline. Portfolios will not be accepted late under any circumstances. If your portfolio is late, you will be required to retake the Capstone course.
- You must orally present your portfolio to faculty and your fellow graduates. Although presentations will not be evaluated, failure to present your portfolio will result in a failing grade for the Capstone course. After your presentation, you will be presented with a written report from the evaluation of your portfolio. If you are not able to be on campus to present your portfolio, arrangements will be made during the Capstone course for your presentation.
- Presenting your portfolio serves multiple purposes. As students in the MWTC Program, you have become members of a discourse community. As you graduate from the Program, you continue to be members of our community as alumni and colleagues. We wish to celebrate your accomplishments with you and ask you to fulfill your role as members of our community by celebrating with us, by contributing to the Program by sharing your work with us and your fellow graduates, and by demonstrating your learning.
Portfolio Submission Requirements
- During the first week of the Capstone course, complete the:
- The portfolio must consist of a persuasive statement and evidence.
- In your persuasive statement, you will present an argument about your learning in the context of program outcomes. The format of the persuasive statement will depend on the application you select to compose and design your portfolio.
- You will select artifacts (assignments, etc) from your work to present and cite as evidence for your persuasive statement. There are no requirements for number or type of content to be selected as evidence; however, you should select and present enough artifacts to convincingly support the argument in your persuasive statement. Your persuasive statement should link to or cite specific areas of your artifacts to support your claims.
- The artifacts you submit should be the graded copy of the assignment returned from your course instructor. If your instructor did not return a copy, indicate the assignment grade in your portoflio when you discuss the artifact in your persuasive statement.
- You must submit your portfolio in electronic format on a CD or DVD. All files (persuasive statement and artifacts) must be accessible on the CD (not external links).
- You may select any application to compose your portfolio that you believe is appropriate.
- Your portfolio must be turned in by the submission deadline. Portfolios will not be accepted late under any circumstances. If your portfolio is late, you will be required to retake the Capstone course.
